Root Canal at Dental Circle

While the thought of having a root canal may strike fear in the hearts of many, it’s important to know that today’s root canal procedures are far more comfortable than those of the past.

Why Are Root Canals Needed?

Also referred to as endodontic therapy, root canal treatment is performed when the nerve or pulp of the tooth becomes infected and inflamed as a result of dental decay, a cracked or broken tooth, or a trauma or injury to the tooth.

The first stage

We remove the decay by accessing the tooth and removing all the debris or decayed material of the nerve tissue. The next step is putting medication such as antibiotics or steroids in the tooth.

The second stage

The second stage is to prepare the canals inside the root. We add more medication in followed by the final stage. At this stage, we fill up the area by adding in material that is biocompatible with your body. Next, we often recommend having a crown done after a root canal because your teeth can be compromised, brittle or weakened.

What are some signs that I might need a root canal?

Some of the most common signs that you need a root canal include discolouration or darkening of the teeth, a severe toothache when chewing, sensitivity to temperatures even after the hot/cold item has been removed, and tenderness of the gums. However, sometimes you won’t have any symptoms. That’s why it’s important to visit the dentist twice a year to ensure your teeth remain healthy.
How will you keep me comfortable during my procedure?

We can give you oral sedation options depending on your medical history. We’ll ensure we have adequate anesthesia before proceeding. If you feel anxious, we have some distraction techniques that are helpful. For example, if you have favourite music you can bring it in and we can have it ready for you to listen to. We also have televisions mounted overhead so you can watch your program of choice.
Why do I need to get a crown after my root canal?

Many people wonder why they would need a crown after a root canal. It’s important to note that a root canal can be quite an extensive procedure. Once we carry out a root canal the tooth no longer has a nerve.

To ensure you get maximum longevity of your tooth, we recommend that you have a crown put on top of the tooth to protect it. Some root canals fail because they’re not properly sealed off with a crown or restoration. That’s when teeth can break and fall apart.

When would I need an extraction instead?

Not every tooth is suitable for a root canal. If there’s no longer a substantial tooth structure, we discuss the two options of extraction and root canal. If we don’t think your tooth can be saved, we will likely recommend an extraction followed by a bridge or implant as an effective replacement option.
